Justify and challenge: a statement with evidence and sentence stems

Good for

Evaluation questions — “To what extent…?” — where pupils must weigh both sides.

How to set it up

  1. 1In the lesson editor, choose Add slide and pick Oracy activity, then choose Justify and challenge.
  2. 2Write the statement or question to argue about, with sentence stems for agreeing and challenging.
  3. 3Set the time for each round.
  4. 4Preview it as a pupil, then run the Readiness check before you launch: it flags anything still missing.

Tips from the classroom

  • Teach the challenge stems first: “I disagree because…”, “What is your evidence for…?”
  • Make pupils argue the side they disagree with.
